A garden design consultation is essential in helping me understand your needs, dreams, preferences, and evaluating your space and the conditions. It sets the foundation for a successful vegetable garden project and our partnership.
Here's my step-by-step guide on how I conduct a garden design consultation:
1. Schedule an Initial Discovery Call:
We will schedule a free 15-minute phone call to talk briefly about your garden dreams and ideas for your space and family. Then, we'll see if a consultation is what is needed or if it is another service. You may have an established garden but need extra help; a Garden Coaching session is better for you. Then, we'll find a time and schedule a meeting on-site to get a firsthand look at your garden space.
2. Gather Information:
Before the in-person meeting, I will ask that you think about your goals for your garden, you, and your family. Please list your "must-haves" and "would-be-nice-to-have.", A Pinterest board with ideas and dreams is 100% acceptable, a vision board, or just a quick list is all perfect. Dream big! This helps us both know what you're thinking and how I can best help you.
3. Understanding Your Vision:
During the consultation, I start by asking open-ended questions to understand your vision for your garden. We'll talk about your ideas, preferences, and lifestyle needs.
Types of questions I'll ask :
What is the primary purpose of the garden (e.g., an abundance of produce, cut flower garden, relaxation, entertainment, engaging with kids)?
What style, look, or theme do you prefer (e.g., formal, cottage, modern, creative)?
Are there any specific features you want to include (e.g., cut flower garden, water features, seating areas, play-zones)?
How much time are you willing to spend on garden maintenance? Daily and weekly?
Do you have any preferred plant types, vegetables, herbs, flowers, or color preferences?
What is your budget for the project?
What is your timeframe for this project?

4. Assess Site Conditions:
Together, we'll walk the space and conduct a thorough site analysis. I'll note the garden's orientation, sunlight exposure, existing plants, soil quality, drainage issues, water source location, and any architectural or landscape features that should be considered.
5. Discuss Budget and Timeline:
It's essential to discuss your budget and timeline for the project. This will help me understand your expectations and limitations, allowing me to propose suitable design solutions; whether it's turnkey or DIY.
6. Share Garden Ideas:
I will share different garden designs and relevant examples to give you an idea of my style and capabilities. Offer preliminary design ideas based on your goals and site conditions.

7. Collaborate and Offer Suggestions:
As the garden specialist, I'll provide suggestions and recommendations to enhance space, the garden possibilities, and ideas. We will discuss your plant options, hardscape materials, sustainability measures, and other design elements that align with your goals and budget.
8. Take Notes and Pictures:
I'll take detailed notes and pictures of the site during the consultation. We can map out where beds can go with stakes and twine to get a feel for your space and what it can hold. These will be valuable references when creating the garden design proposal.
9. Discuss Next Steps:
Before concluding the consultation, I'll explain the next steps in the garden design process. This may include creating a garden design proposal with estimates, conceptual sketches, and a proposed timeline for the project. Anticipate this in about 5-7 days via email.
10. Follow Up:
After the consultation, I'll send a summary of the discussed ideas, budget, and timeline. Include any follow-up steps, such as setting up a second meeting or providing additional references or visual aids. Anticipate this in about 5-7 days via email. After you receive this you'll have time to review, and then we can set-up a phone call to discuss.
We must communicate effectively for a successful garden partnership; please share your thoughts and feedback with me. My goal is to deliver what you want and what works for you; I will share my knowledge and experience about what would work best for you and your space and provide the reasoning to make educated decisions. I like to build a strong connection with my clients and create a garden design that meets and exceeds your expectations.
